“Today more than half of the world population does not have access to basic healthcare services. Every year, almost 100 million people are pushed into conditions of extreme poverty because of the debts they accumulate for their health expenses.”- said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Dr. Carissa Etienne also contrasted the Cuban reality with the countries of America, that have not been able to overcome the barriers to access to healthcare. She said that “more than a third of the inhabitants of this region do not have access to comprehensive healthcare services. In 2013 and 2014, there were more than 1.2 million deaths that could have been avoided if health systems had offered quality and accessible services.” One of MECHNIKOV’s tasks is to improve the level of health services in Nicaragua and throughout the region.
