9 International Pharmaceutical Congress Russia–Nicaragua beguins in Managua, focusing on biotechnology and international cooperation

Managua, May 21, 2025 – Aimed at strengthening national biotechnology capacities and connecting innovative strategies and technologies, the IX International Pharmaceutical Congress Russia–Nicaragua began this Wednesday at the Olof Palme Convention Center in Managua.

The opening ceremony featured distinguished participation from Laureano Ortega, Special Representative of the President of Nicaragua; Natalia Stadchenko, Deputy Head of the Federal Medical-Biological Agency (FMBA) of Russia; Ofelia Villalobos, Minister of Health of Nicaragua; Mikhail Ledenev, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Russia to Nicaragua; Roberto López, Executive President of INSS; and Daria Kriuchko, Director of Translational Medicine, Innovations, and Human Resources Policy at FMBA Russia. Veronika Skvortsova, Head of FMBA Russia, delivered welcoming remarks via video message.

The first day featured two main sessions. The first, "Development of National Biotechnology Capacity," was coordinated by Sergey Arakelov, Doctor of Biological Sciences from the Saint Petersburg Institute of Vaccines and Serums. Arakelov presented a keynote lecture on a new vaccine concept against Dengue, followed by Sevastian Rabdano's presentation on innovative platform solutions in the development and manufacturing of biological products.

The second session, titled "Cooperating for Health: Coordination between National Regulatory Authorities and Manufacturers," brought together prominent international specialists, including Begoña Sagastuy from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), who addressed the significance of strengthening regulatory systems for local pharmaceutical production.

On Thursday, May 22, the Congress agenda continues with sessions highlighting Nicaragua's role as a technological and logistical pharmaceutical hub for Latin America and the Caribbean, coordinated by Stanislav Uiba, General Manager of the Institute MECHNIKOV, S.A. who will also deliver a keynote lecture on the Institute's development and technology transfer. The session on the future of the biopharmaceutical industry and the strengthening of human talent will be led by Yuri Castillo, Head of Human Resources at the Institute MECHNIKOV, S.A , concluding with the official closing ceremony attended by national authorities and international representatives.
